House Blessing, House Blessing Prayer and Bible Verses to Pray Over Your Home

Praying is one of the best ways to battle and overcome spiritual strongholds in your life… and in your home. Learn how to bless your home, plus find several Bible verses about house blessing.

Creating a TRULY Peaceful Place 

When visiting our home, people have often told us how peaceful it feels and how relaxed they are when they are here. I always smile when they say this because I know that creating that feeling and special place of rest isn’t a coincidence or an accident…or even entirely because of how organized or pretty our home is.

It’s because of something Dean and I have been very deliberate about, especially in the last decade or more…praying through and over our home.

Our Struggle 

In Ephesians 6:12, the Bible tells us that “our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” 

I believe this verse to be true, that there are spiritual forces of good and evil fighting against each other all around us that we can’t see. In other words, spiritual warfare is very real, even in this “enlightened” day and age when it seems easy to shrug it off or dismiss it as nonsense. 

People with the spiritual gift of discernment know this very well and can often recognize when a space feels “off” and why. But often, others without that God-given gift can feel relaxed or stressed in a heavily negative space too; they just aren’t usually able to articulate why they feel that way. 

Given this invisible struggle between good and evil, we need to be sure our homes are covered in prayer and that the triune God (Father God, Jesus of Nazareth, and the Holy Spirit) is the only one we invite in…and that we send everything else back to the feet of Jesus by His power alone. 

To Whom Does Your House Belong?

Dean and I have lived in a lot of places over the years. We got married when we were young, and I went to college after we were married. During those college years, we rented many basement apartments and parts of other people’s homes before we bought our first house many years later.

We weren’t yet Christians back then, and in a few of those apartments, I spent a lot of time worrying excessively and being afraid. I couldn’t put my finger on why I felt safe and secure in one place and scared and depressed in another. Looking back, I now know it was because of (some of my own and) a lot of other people’s spiritual junk leftover in the places we lived. 

Let me explain a little…

If you live in an older home or someone else’s home like we did, it’s very likely that people have lived there before yours that maybe had entirely different beliefs than yours. People who had all sorts of baggage and plenty of their own inherited issues. Maybe people who watched horror movies or messed around with Ouija boards, or practiced palm reading, shamanism, or witchcraft. Things that, as Christians, we know we’re not supposed to go near because of the power behind those things and what they invite in – i.e. NOT your heavenly Father. 

After becoming a Christian in 2002, I began reading the bible and studying Scripture more. In time, I came upon Joshua 24:15, now a familiar verse, which reads, in part: “As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD” (ESV). 

This whole praying over our home was a slow-burn lightbulb moment for me in my home journey – kind of like those older energy-efficient lightbulbs that were dim when they were first turned on but got brighter the longer they were left on. Here’s what I’ve come to know:

Everything we own as Christians belongs to God. We are simply stewards or caretakers of all that we have. With that stewardship comes a choice of who we are going to serve with those possessions – ourselves, the devil, or our heavenly Father.

Truthfully, I sometimes forget and choose to serve myself. But more often, I hope and pray that I choose God. 

So it is with our homes. We get to choose who we are going to serve with them. Which brings me to house blessings and praying over our spaces. 

Common Questions About Doing a House Blessing

One of the best ways to dedicate your home to God and His purposes (and to invite His love and protection into it) is to do a house blessing. 

What is a house blessing?

A house blessing, in its simplest form, is a way of blessing our homes and dedicating them to God and His purposes. It’s a way of protecting our homes from spiritual danger, much like we do by locking the doors to protect our homes and ourselves from physical danger. 

Who can perform a house blessing?

You can perform a house blessing by yourself, with your spouse, or with friends and family.

Traditionally, in many Christian denominations, house blessings have been performed by a minister or priest and involve lighting a candle and/or anointing a house with oil. 

When should you do a house blessing?

After or while going through a difficult time, when you feel the need, or after you’ve moved into. new home doing a house blessing can help bring serenity and peace to your home. 

How to Do a House Blessing

If you’ve never done a house blessing before, here’s how:

1. Remove certain things

Remove anything and everything from your home that has evil roots or that is not God-honoring. Things like scary books, horror movies, revealing posters, clothing with skulls or other death imagery, video games, death metal music, decorations (I’m looking at you, scary Halloween decorations!), dream catchers, idols, etc. 

If you can’t think of anything you may have that fits this description or category, pray and ask the Holy Spirit to show you anything that should be removed. 

For example, years ago our daughter started having night terrors when she was about 7. It was terrifying and awful and no one got any sleep for weeks – which is a type of hell on earth in itself, let me tell you! After desperately praying about it, we figured out that there was a kids’ video game that she had been playing (a lot of kids we knew were playing it too) that was actually full of shamans and animal spirits behind all the seemingly harmless fun. Once we removed the game from our home and devices and prayed against all of that in Jesus’ name, the night terrors – Praise the Lord – stopped. 

What could be in your house that maybe isn’t what you think it is? Or that you’ve never thought about in this way before?

Look, I know that for some of you, this may sound insane. Maybe you’re not a Christian and you don’t see why I’m saying this. Or maybe you are a Christian and find this doesn’t align with your beliefs. It’s your home and it’s up to you. But in our house, we’ve found this to be a healthy way to honor God and bring real peace into our home environment. 

2. Invite close family and friends to pray with you

Get your Christian friends and family involved with this blessing by inviting them over and having them participate.

Having loved ones be a part of the blessing can add to the experience and give your loved ones a chance to bless your home as well. 

But, for obvious reasons, if you are going to invite others, involve only those of the same faith and beliefs as you and your family. 

3. Pray through each room of your home

This is the CORE part of a house blessing and is sometimes called a Prayer Walk rather than a house blessing. 

It is the process of consecrating (making holy) your home and dedicating it as “holy ground.” 

To do this part of a house blessing: 

• Begin on the lowest level of your home, then…
• Pray through each room, over each doorway, and around each window.
• Continue to walk through your home, praying for each room and each space, moving up through your house. Don’t forget closets, stairwells, laundry rooms, garages, and bathrooms. 
• Finish by praying over each of the four walls on the outside of your home, as well as the lowest floor and the highest ceiling (or roof). You can absolutely extend this to the four sides of your property too. This is sort of like putting your home in a big protective box. 

The focus of your prayers should be on the home and those who dwell in it. However, you can customize your prayers to be whatever you feel is needed. The goal of these prayers is to: 

• Rebuke the devil and shut down and shut out anything that’s not of God. 
• Invite the Holy Spirit into your home so that He may fill it, protect it and bless it. 

Sample House Blessing Prayer

Dear God, we thank you for this place we call home. We pray that you would send your Holy Spirit to protect it against any attacks of the enemy. We pray against any evil that tries to enter our house, and for the strength for each of us to overcome temptation. We pray that you would shut down and shut out anything that’s not of you. We pray that we will leave no opportunity for the devil to enter (knowingly or unknowingly) and where we have in the past that you would shut those doors now. Fill this house with your presence Lord and help our family to love you and follow you all the days of our lives. May we seek you and always find you. In Jesus Christ of Nazareth’s holy name. Amen.

Additional Optional Step

As odd as it may sound, pleading the blood of Jesus Christ over each space is also very powerful. Jesus died on the cross for us, shedding his blood for our sins and to save us. 

You can say something like: 

“I plead the blood of Jesus Christs of Nazareth between myself/my home/my family and the entire realm of spiritual darkness.” 

Bible Verses to Pray Over Your Home

Your home may not be empty or even new to you. You may not have a friend who’s a prayer pastor. But you can most certainly pray through your home, renouncing anything that’s not of God and dedicating (or rededicating) it to Him.

Speaking God’s Word back to Him is a guaranteed place of meeting Him. It’s one of the most powerful ways to pray because His Word is living and active (see Hebrews 4:12). 

Your prayers don’t have to be eloquent or complicated. God will understand your simple prayers and the heart behind them.

Here are a few verses to give you a head start praying over and through your home. Use them as verbal prayers as you do your house blessing or even display them as art in your rooms. 

• As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Joshua 24:15
• Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayer that is made in this place. For now I have chosen and consecrated this house that my name may be there forever. My eyes and my heart will be there for all time. 2 Chronicles 7:15-16 
• The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. Numbers 6:24-26 
• Give us this day our daily bread. Matthew 6:11
• Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain. Psalm 127:1
• When you lie down, you will not be afraid; yes, you will lie down and your sleep will be sweet. Provers 3:24
• For God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power and of love and love a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7
• And thus you shall greet him: ‘Peace be to you, and peace be to your house, and peace be to all that you have.’ 1 Samuel 25:6 
• Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house!’ Luke 10:5 

Optional: Anoint Your Home with Oil

There is nothing mystical or magical about anointing your home with oil and it is an optional part of a house blessing. It is powerfully symbolic, though. 

Anointing oil is simply oil that has been dedicated to use for God’s purposes.

In the Jewish faith, anointing oil is oil mixed with myrrh and cinnamon among other things. However, you can simply use olive oil that has been placed in a small vial and been prayed over, asking God to cleanse it and dedicate it to His use. Using anointing oil is a symbol of your faith and God’s absolute holiness. 

To anoint your home with oil simply mark a cross on the outer walls, windows, floors, ceilings, and doorposts with the oil. Ask God to fill your home with His Holy Spirit and that every single thing that happens in your home will be ONLY according to His will.

This step can be done while you walk through each room praying or as a separate step at another time. 

Remember This

The Lord is sovereign, and He already has the victory in all things.

Blessing your house or not blessing your house won’t make or break your salvation That is by the work of Jesus alone, and He doesn’t need our help with it (Ephesians 2:8).  

But dedicating our homes to God with Scripture and asking for His holy protection and blessing over them affects how you and yours live your lives in freedom here on earth. By doing this you will find that your home is more peaceful and even tangibly more comfortable than before.
